I'm a man who knows my snack treats, but sometimes even I am slightly mystified. While at the checkout with our pinata, this possible visit to the hospital was available for your sweet tooth. I don't think it's "Lucas Salsagheti" (guessing it's just an old box they put it in), and the leaky no expiration date plastic spoonful of brown goop didn't entice me enough to actually purchase it, so I can't tell you what it tastes like.
Why don't YOU try it and tell me?
It is tamarindo candy. Basically it is a candy made from tamarinds. Sometimes very sour and often served with chili powder

BTW Tamarindo is a pejorative term for the Mexico City cops dressed in tan uniforms... tamatindo is slang for dingleberry.
That's not red enough to be tamarind candy like the kind you get in Mexico.
ReplyDeleteI'd say it's the same brownish hue as either dulce de leche/cajeta or arequipe.
Most of the time is tamarind candy with chili powder. Addictive stuff!
ReplyDeleteI'm over 40 years old and I am yet to see an expiration date in one of those products, but I have never tasted one that is bad.
A little more info: The tamarind tree is from tropical Africa, but was introduced to Mexico in the 16th cent. by the Spaniards, and it became very common there since then. The fruit of the plant, the tamarind, has great antibacterial properties, like the chile.

ReplyDeleteAlmost certainly they are Dulce de Leche (basically carmel candy) spoons. They are not the right color to be tamarindo, which is the other thing you will see like that. I see them in San Antonio all the time.

If you really wanted to know what it was you should have bought one, and ate it, instead of you know, taking a picture of it with your cellphone then posting it to Blogspot asking "What is this?" You could have just paid like 75 cents to answer the question yourself. This is what the internet does to people.
ReplyDeleteTamarind is correct. It's a paste of tamarind goo pretty much right from the pod near as I can tell. Every store innmy neighborhood has these, sometimes just the fruit pulp like this and sometimes covered in chili powder.
ReplyDeleteTamarind candy = good stuff, we used to eat lucas pelucas in the squeeze tubes as kids here in colorado, wish they still sold the Lucas powder....
