Lovely Memories!

More show flyers!
Please… you can stop applauding!
Seriously!
Sit!
Please sit down!
This is embarrassing!

Lovely Memories!

A look back on the many times I've graciously treated the little people to showings of my genius.
You'd think the ungrateful bastards would've bought SOMETHING!

Flea Market Finds!

Found out afterwards that "pal" Ron Murphy broke the rules and bought something without me giving it the once over first.
You think I'm kidding?! Don't fuck with me people!!

Flea Market Finds!

An amazing 3-D clown masterpiece, found by the eagle eye of Mike Noland who graciously handed it over to me for the purchase price. And I had a big hissy fit to help his decision along.

Flea Market Finds!

Also didn't purchase this tribute to the fairer sex...

Flea Market Finds!

Was tempted to purchase these kitschy gold nude male statues but was afraid that that might turn me gay. I'm happy with the way things are.

Flea Market Finds!

Took a break with pals Ron and Mike to hit the Wisconsin Elkhorn flea market. My beginning ritual is to stand at the entrance, raise my arms, and announce the rules.
"Dealers! Don't sell anything until I've taken a look at it first!"
"Buyers! Don't purchase anything until I've taken a look at it! On second thought, don't buy anything even after I've taken a look at it because I might change my mind and go back for it!"
"In short, everyone go home!!!"

Arty McFarty 1!

As my day winds down, let's wayback machine to a few Arty McFarty snippets of time...

Classic Mitch!

Been cleaning up/coloring/trying to improve a bunch of old doodles as I put together my 2012 book for Last Gasp. That's the reason for you're seeing these space fillers!

Classic Mitch!

Sleepy. Groggy. And that means I only have the energy for a "Classic Mitch" posting!

Happy Father's Day!

A couple other reasons for the celebration!

Classic Mitch!

As I move into actually getting paid for comic covers, the highlight of doing this piece (besides the money)? It's using my favorite model, daughter Kieran, holding the "I Love You This Much" statue.

Classic Mitch!

The bars are on the windows, the door is nailed shut, let the never ending slideshow continue!
Charlton comics would use my illustrations while I was an art school student. On the plus side- I got my work published! On the not quite as plus side, my payment was a dozen free copies.

Classic Mitch!

Everything I do is worth commemorating, revisiting and rejoicing (or at least that must be the impression I'm giving by posting whatever happens to be on my desktop at the moment)!

Classic Mitch!

We time machine to 1997, back when I had the youthful energy to make everything look like round double lighted candy.

Classic Mitch!

Also, much time was spent copying panels from Creepy and Eerie...

Classic Mitch!

As a Tween I seemed to alternate between only drawing Conan, Swamp Thing and Batman. You guess which one this is!

Halloween Memories!

The easiest costume EVER (though it helps if you already come equipped with a big bald white noggin)!

Odd Moments in Advertising!

Grandma also gave her a few other helpful pointers that weren't quite so fit to print.

Be An Artist!

Speaking of art courses through the mail ...my mom took 'em!
I've saved all the lessons and study guides. Wonderful stuff and quality schooling!

Reviews for "Mitch O'Connell Tattoos"

Ken Tucker, Entertainment Weekly on EW.com "5 Reasons to Live".
"Beautiful color drawings. Mitch O'Connell is a master of skin deep kitsch"

Intake Magazine
"His old-school style features just the kind of sick sense of humor that the rat rod & Adult Swim crowds love. There are loads of great designs just waiting to be etched into your virgin flesh."

Total Tattoo Magazine
4 star rating ""Aficionados of all things low brow will know the name Mitch O'Connell. Mitch O'Connell Tattoos is a beautifully produced, chunky little volume which will provide much inspiration to tattooists and collectors who want something with the flavour of old school, traditional tattoos but with the unique flair and style of the esteemed Mr. O'Connell."

Tattoo Revue Magazine
"If you're not familiar with Mitch's work you must be new to this planet. Smart, funny and exceedingly well executed, Mitch O'Connell Tattoos is sure to kick start even the most sluggish ink lover into a body art frenzy"

Tiki Magazine
"He's fueled by an incredible imagination and innate sense of humor"

Chicago Journal Newspaper
"Mitch O'Connell has established himself as one of the busiest, most talented, and most recognizable illustrators in Chicago. Mitch O'Connell tattoos is a beautiful artifact, with vivid color printing and heavy stock paper."

Prick Tattoo Magazine
"He has a very distinctive style that combines cartoony illustrations with iconic imagery and kitschy subject matter to create lowbrow masterpieces."

Bizarre Magazine
"This magnificent book combines a sizzling selection of Mitch's screaming skulls. lascivious ladies, drag racing demons and kitsch kitties. Each one of them the perfect flesh adornment for everyone from rockabily rebels and flag-waving patriots, to the broken hearted or just plain crazy."

International Tattoo Art Magazine
"Mitch O'Connell is an illustrator, and a damn good one. One of the top illustrators in the country, in fact. You can tell an O'Connell image from as far as you can see it, which is high praise indeed. As a recipe for quasi-traditional skin illustration, it can't be beat. Chubby composition, clear and easy to read, and eyeball-friendly. Plus- and this can't be overstated for it's vaule-he knows his imagery playbook. You gotta love it."

Urban Ink Magazine
"Whether you're looking for some tattoo inspiration or you're a fan of cool retro illustrations, this is a must have for your library collection. This guy has been kickin' some of the coolest pieces of art ever to see daylight. O'Connell's illustrations are absolutely the best."

Hi-Fructose Magazine
"These tattoos are the bee's knees. They harken back to an era where a tattoo was a Tattoo. This book is a testament to a prolific illustrator whom respects the art, craft, and heritage of ink so much he might just be the guy to save it."

Illo. Magazine
"O'Connell's art is reminiscent of the classic tattoo designs from masters such as Sailor Jerry Collins and Don Ed Hardy, but features O'Connell's distinctive surrealistic style and profoundly warped sense of humor. Whether you are a tattoo aficionado or not is irrelevant, as this collection of drawings should appeal to anyone interested in contemporary comics, hot chicks, surrealism, or just-plain-strange. And it's bargain-priced, to boot!"

Damone!

To continue the Damone fever- my rough doodles for the cover of "Roll the Dice". They wanted to go in a more '70's "ELO" direction, which would have been very fun to do, but (see previous excuse) I had to drop out.

Be An Artist!

"Look! Mitch drew penises on everything. He's funny!"
All I needed was the sensational "Laugh Finder" included with the course!

Fine print- you don't get an actual female that you can return in 10 days if not completely satisfied.
"No Lessons! No Talent!" has always been my motto.
"Comic book artists are earning from $8000 to $250,000 per year!"
But keep in mind, after you adjust those 1940's figures for today, expect "From $8000 to $0 per year!"

Be An Artist!

Finally a way to put all these skills to use!
I've almost completed the course!
They forgot "All the macaroni and cheese dinners you can eat!" in the Checklist of Opportunities in Cartooning (but I do want that "Complete Professional Kit")!

This sounds GREAT, "A few short hours of cartooning pays large sums!"
